CHILDREN & YOUTH ACTIVITIES

CONFIRMATION CLASS IS STARTING

Confirmation class is going to begin on March 9.  The class will meet each Sunday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m. for a period of about 10-12 weeks.  The purpose of the class is to prepare young people to be received as members of the church.  Any young person in grade 7 or older who would like to be a part of the class should see Dr. Bowen or Steven Werth as soon as possible.

BAPTISM

We were pleased to celebrate the sacrament of Jennifer Lynn Desalvo on February 3.  Jennifer is an 8th grader at Carlynton Junior/Senior High.  During elementary school, Jennifer took part in our Youth Club and Adventure Group programs, and attended our youth dances.  She is now a regular worshiper on Sunday morning, and she is taking part in the PYC youth group.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday school classes start each week at 9:45 a.m.  Steven Werth, our seminary student, is leading a class for grades 6-12.  Alicia Conboy is the teacher for grades 1-5.  And Jacquelyn Todd is leading the class for preschool and kindergarten.  Dr. Bowen is teaching the adult class.  The adult class is doing a series on peace.  In the midst of a world that is so often torn apart by war and hatred, what comfort and guidance can we find from God in the Bible?  Join us as we explore those important issues.  New members are always welcome.

ADVENTURE GROUP

Adventure Group (for grades 4 and up) meets at the church from after school until 4:30 p.m. every Tuesday.  In February, at one of their meetings they burned the leftover palm branches from last year’s Palm Sunday service to make the ashes for this year’s Ash Wednesday service.  At one of their other meetings they traveled to Crafton Plaza to visit with the older adults who live there.  Weekly activities include snacks, games, crafts, Bible stories, service projects, prayer, and much more.  Bring your friends!

YOUTH CLUB

Youth Club (for kids in K-grade 6) meets each Wednesday from after school until 6:00 p.m.  The activities include a snack, music, Bible stories, games, dinner and Celebration Time.  Children are asked to bring $1 each week to help defray the cost of the meal and supplies.  All youth in the community are welcome to come.

YOUTH DANCE

A dance for young people in grades 4-6 will be held at the church from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, March 7.  Admission is $2 and there will be a D.J. and refreshments.  Invite your friends!

HOCKEY GAME

Because of our relationship with the Tickets For Kids organization, we were able to send a 5th grader and her mother to the Penguins hockey game on February 13.  Tickets For Kids provides tickets to many sporting, educational, and cultural events to churches and other groups that reach out to and serve a significant number of lower-income children in their communities.

SNOW POLICY

On any day when Carlynton School District delays or cancels school because of the weather, Adventure Group and Youth Club are automatically canceled.

PYC (Presbyterian Youth Connection)

The Presbyterian Youth Connection (grades 7 and up) meets every Sunday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  During February, the PYC helped to prepare the prayer stations that were used by church members during the Sunday school hour on February 10.  On March 16, instead of having our regular meeting, the PYC is encouraged to attend the “Why Must He Die?” musical Passion play at 6:00 p.m.  There will be no PYC on March 23, which is Easter.  Activities include recreation, prayer, Bible study, singing, and refreshments.  Invite your friends.

TIME TO SIGN UP FOR THE SUMMER MISSION TRIP!

Even though there is still snow in the air, now is the time to sign up for this summer’s mission trip to Lewisburg, West Virginia.  The mission trip will take place from Saturday, July 12, through Saturday, July 19.  We can take only 25 people, and spots are already starting to fill up.  So if you want to be a part of this great adventure, sign up soon!

We will be staying at the Clifton Presbyterian Church, in the southeastern part of the state.  While there we will be taking part in a wide variety of service projects.  In the past we have done things such as build porches for low-income homeowners, do painting and fix-up projects for a shelter for abused women and children, visit with senior citizens in nursing homes, and assist elderly people with projects at their homes.

We will also be enjoying many different recreational opportunities.  There are several nearby parks.  And one day we will be taking a raft trip on the New River.

To reserve your place for the mission trip, you need to make a $40 deposit no later than April 6.  The total cost of the trip is $175, but we will have some fund-raising projects to help defray that cost.  If the cost of the trip is a problem for you or your family, please speak with Dr. Bowen as soon as possible to discuss the possibility of receiving scholarship assistance.  For more information about the trip or to sign up, see Dr. Bowen, Mike Haddox, or Tricia Sanders.
